History

The community centre was once used by and maintained by the workers from the local Parkhouse Colliery. They paid 1 penny for the maintenance and upkeep of the centre and used it for many games, meetings and as a base for local sports teams and events.

There was once a Cricket Pitch, Football Pitch and Bowling Green that were all used actively up until the late 1950’s.

There was also a successful swimming team that ran from the centre and used it to hold its meetings and presentation evenings.

In the 1960’s a second room was added to extend the community centre as it could not keep up with demand for the centre’s use.

In March 2015 the centre was lucky enough to be given funding of £80’000 for a major overhaul regarding appearance and structural work.

It involved several trades that incorporated joinery, new flooring and re-decoration, new electrical wiring, plumbing and heating along with a new plasterboard ceiling.

It also gave us the opportunity to upgrade our insulation, resulting in lower energy consumption and giving us a warm and inviting centre.
